If you study one specific topic, hard core, for a few weeks or even for several months, you will end up knowing more about that specific topic than 99% of the human population. You see, most of the population does not spend any quality time focused on any one topic, and certainly do not focus on a topic with the intent of teaching it, or selling solutions.

You see, most people just react in life and skim the surface of everything. Now, there are some topics that people go to school for, like medical school, or law school, or have to master a topic for their job, but most have no clue when it comes to specific topics.

An example for illustration purposes

Let’s say you spend the next several weeks ONLY focused on how to get traffic with press releases. I am saying that for the next several weeks, you focus on everything you can find, learn, discover, test, and examine for the topic of “press releases”.

In no time, you will know more about “press releases” than 99% of internet marketers, and perhaps even more than the people who actually write press releases. Quickly, you will have expert status.

You may not feel like an expert, or think of yourself as an expert, but you easily could “hold your own” when it comes to that topic. And, if you are bold enough and confident enough, you could likely present yourself as an expert, and then people would treat you like an expert.

Listen, I can hear that little voice talking right now too, and it is likely saying something like, “Yeah, but you have not practiced or gained enough experience to be a true expert, so you are stretching the truth”.

This could be called “soft marketing”, or we could call it fluffy, soft, righteousness, and even powder-puff marketing.

In other words, it is being too soft. It is like saying, “I am not going to email my list and sell them things because that would be too aggressive, and people do not like being pitched stuff by email”. Ever felt like that?

But this is marketing.
This is sales.
This is real business, in the real world.

Here is another real life example. A friend of mine, lets call him Tom, was diagnosed with high blood pressure. The doctor put him on medicine, but he did not like that medicine.

Most people would simply get the prescription, and say “I guess I have to”. However, Tom decided to research the topic and wanted to find everything he could about his problem. Millions of people have high blood pressure.

Quickly, he started finding potential solutions. Plus, he pretty much figured out why he had high blood pressure in the first place. The reason was obvious to many, but was not obvious to Tom at first, because the doctor said absolutely nothing about it.

Tom thought he had a heart problem when he left the doctor’s office. The doctor never even mentioned the common sense solution, which is to lose some freaking weight!

The doctor was more focused on prescribing the right medicine that would fit Tom, and one he would have to stay on forever.

So, solution one Tom found was to drop weight. It did not take him very long after he started researching the topic. Next, he found that breathing could be a problem for some people, which could cause high blood pressure.

This one struck Tom because he has often been told by others to breathe! For example, his old baseball coach would tell him to breathe properly when lifting weights. He would get all dizzy when lifting weights, and sometimes he thought he was about to pass out. He noticed that he was not breathing.

He sort of held his breath when in deep concentration or exertion. Well guess what else Tom noticed … he held his breath when writing on his computer, or when trying to figure out a piece of software, or putting in a graphic headline.

To counter his challenge Tom found breathing exercises, including devices that helped with that. He was monitoring his own blood pressure, and the combination of the breathing exercises, and eating more healthy foods, plus light exercise solved his blood pressure problem.

Now what is the point of all this?

Tom probably knows more about how to lower his high blood pressure than 99% of the population, and probably more than 75% of those who actually have high blood pressure, and maybe even more than a certain percentage of doctors know about it.

Is Tom an expert trained in medical school? No, and he would never claim to be a doctor, or that he can cure anything. That would be stupid and illegal. However, he can surely present a solution to high blood pressure that worked for him!

It is his determination and focus on the subject that shows us that we too can become experts in our field, and find solutions to grow our business, and make a compelling case that might make some sales!
